Awajishima onion is a national brand because of its soft sweet and fresh taste. This good quality is based on the good soil and warm temperature of Awajishima. The southern area of the island “Mihara plainis located in the area of the major fault from Wakayama to Tokushima prefectures and the soils are sandy and with good drainage which is appropriate for onion production.
Figs produced in Awajishima are widely distributed all over the Osaka and Kobe areas at many supermarkets. Figs are highly nutritious containing potassium ions, dietary fibers, and a special protease named fusin. Fig production started almost 50 years ago in Goshiki. Now it is one of the major agri products in Awaji Island.
Although scale of onion production is quite large, now scale of lettuce production is even larger than that of onion. Since people can harvest vegetables twice a year under the warm environment, they produce lettuce and onion in a year
