Awajishima is surrounded by three different seas each of which has different sites to visit. The west coast is known for its beautiful sunsets and waves. The east coast faces Osaka bay with a deep historical background. The southern area faces Naruto channel which is linked to the Pacific Ocean. At the north and south ends of Awajishima we can see channels with whirlpools. Especially the Naruto whirlpools are one of the major three whirlpool sites in the world. This miracle whirlpools are caused by the following mechanisms; the sea water flows around the island once a day. It starts from the south-east end area of the island in the morning at the highest tide level, going up to the north end of the island and moves to the west side in the afternoon. It reaches the south-west end of the island, Naruto Channelfinally at the lowest tide level in a day. The sea bottom levels between the west and the east of Naruto channel is very different. Since the west side level is much higher than the east side level, the sea water moves rapidly from the west to the east of the channel, causing the miracle whirlpools once a day.

Along with the long costal lines of the island, you can find many nice seashores for swimming. You can also enjoy nice cafes and terraces to take rest and feel healing environment.
