Awaji Island is located in the Seto Inland Sea where it is warm through a whole year and the average temperature is around 15 degrees. The island is separated into two geologically independent areas by it’s central mountain range; the west faces the Seto Inland sea and the east, Osaka bay. On the west coast, the wind is relatively strong while the east coast is protected by the mountains and it is calm. Because of this more residences are found along the eastern coastline. Along the eastern side, national route 28, connects the north and the south ends of the island. The distance between both ends is about 50 km. The perimeter of the island has a beautiful coastal road that loops the whole way around. It makes for a beautifully scenic drive. At the central area of the island a nice highway is located and connects the north and south ends of the island. While the northern area of the island is mountainous and you can see steep valleys, the southern area is relatively flat.

Since the ancient times, agriculture has been a main industry of the island and because of this, more than 20 thousand manmade ponds have been needed for agricultural activities. The highest mountain on the island is Yuzuruha mountain which is 608 meters high.
