We have a Japanese traditional myth that Awajishima is the origin of Japan, created by ancient gods. The gods are Izanigi and Izanami, a couple, and they are enshrined at Izanagi shrine at a central area of Awajishima, which is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. In Awajishima many spots are related to the myth are located all over the island. In the southern area of the island, the remains of ancient rice fields of Yayoi period 2000 years ago are found. Bronze mirrors and pikes, typical relics of the Yayoi period have been found as well. At Gossakaito ruins, a production site of iron relics known as the symbolic relic of late Yayoi period is found. This is recognized as a national historical site by the Japanese government. The 47th Emperor Junnin in the late 8th century was exiled to Awajishima and died there after a political issue at that time. A tragedy of Prince Sawara, brother of Emperor Kanmu in late 8th century is related to Awajisjima. In Awajishima there are many sites related to such historical events. You can visit there and enjoy ancient Japanese history.
Many festivals and performing arts related to the historical events are also found in the island. In March, an annual memorial festival of Izanagi shrine is performed. In this festival, floats are brought out to celebrate the festival and people sing a special song with this float. Japanese Bunraku puppet show was very popular during Yedo period in 17th century but it lost its popularity afterwards. Now Awaji people have reactivated the Bunraku puppet show and established a special theater “Awaji jyoururi za”. Awaji jyoruri is unique because it has been based on both Shinto ritual and performing arts.
